It's very hard to define what exactly ambient and drone music is. It's a broad spectrum with hardly any boundaries and which is open to a lot of experiments. Sometimes gentle sounds without much variations, other times dreams-evoking and oppressive rhythms.

With this compilation Consouling Sounds tries to do justice to this diversity, as the sound palette goes from monotone soundscapes and guitar drones over dark ambient and field recordings to electronic and new age-like ambient.

Nearly all tracks are unreleased and/or exclusive to this release. Featured artists are: [multer], Blyndhæð, Distant Fires Burning, IAM., Mirko Uhlig, Monotonos, N, Nihilum, Premonition Factory, Simulacra, Soundsketching and Tzesne.

A new year brings new opportunities! Routenote was thinking the same as they announced we could now manage our own download store AND determine our prices ourself.

A good thing considering the fact that I always found my music a bit overpriced on the download stores. So here I give you Messierobjecten for 6 USD and 7 Sisters for 4 USD. You can alway catch an individual song for 0,70 USD. Seems a fair price for me. What's your opinion?

I updated the music section on www.doorchaser.tk added more links to download sites, stores and reviews etc. Please go take a look and tell me what you think.

And last but not least Consouling Sounds will release an exclusive Distant Fires Burning track on the upcoming compilation release "Magnetic Fields & Zero Dimensional Planes". The release is scheduled somewhere around march/april.

It's almost the end of the year and this is the perfect time to look back on a great Distant Fires Burning year. It's the year where I was blessed with my first label-release on U-Cover CDR Limited, Build on Me and with a remix of Northcape's track Clear Moment from his latest full length Captured From Static (actually being my second label release on Sun Sea Sky Productions).

With my other project 2?? we hit the road and had some great shows while still building on our liveset. And with all the experience from this year I bet the shows of 2011 will be significantly better...

2010 was the year where the music of Distant Fires Burning got picked up by a fine selection of radio stations (Soma FM, Kink FM, Klara, ...)

2010 was also the year I discovered my music on several download and torrent sites. I guess this is an inevitable phenomenon in music business. So I'm not gonna complain about it. For my part be free to take the effort to search for my songs, download them and enjoy.

I've recently joined the Steve Reich remix contest on indabamusic. I'm a huge fan of the work of Steve Reich (In particular I enjoyed his "Double Sextet" and "Music for 18 Musicians") so I couldn't resist to enter the contest. I downloaded the tracks from "2x5 - Movement III: Fast" and I started to do the Distant Fires Burning Thingie on it.

In 2007 Gert started to experiment more with ambient. He was asked to make the soundtrack of a commercial for the brand “Kinto”. Goddeau.com published a double review of “7 Sisters” and “Build on Me”. Again it's in Dutch but I'll try to give you the highlights:

“By the hypothermic build up and the spun soundtracks,7 Sisters, despite of the strong difference in the songs, threatens to be an elongated track that balances dangerously between meditatively mesmerizing and unnecessarily boring. Distant Fires Burning knows how to get around this strikingly, but the danger of repeating itself is very very real. And so it is utterly promising that on Build on Me he carefully chooses to take another turn and explores new sounds.”

Here's a nice review of the "Build on Me" album where they say there's a beautiful balance between digital and instrumental ingredients, that the soundvisions succeed in bringing a slow, desolate atmosphere and that it never tends to sound passive!

Some criticism: They say they can't find the total story, returning theme's or elements. This leads to the fact that Distant Fires Burning loses a bit identity!

In any way we learn from our critics!!!

"Build on Me" out now on U-Cover Records

Today, U-Cover Records released the third album by Distant Fires Burning, "Build on Me", on it's sublabel U-Cover CDR Limited.

It's a CDR limited on 155 copy's. For 9,50 euro u get 8 tracks of Ambient-soundscapes and drones. The difference with Messierobjekten and 7 Sisters is that for the first time my basic sound is created by using the Fender Jazz Bass. Tracks 2,6,7 and 8 start from a Bass-scape where additional synths were added to empower the feel of the Bass-scape. Tack 3 "Oppression" exists only of a Bass-Scape and effects no synths were added there.

I'm happy to see it released through U-Cover Records because it's a label that understands my interests the best. They bring the best in Ambient, IDM, dub and glitch music and have no fear to support fairly unknown artists like Distant Fires Burning. Koen Lybaert runs the label and together with Esther Santoyo (Mexico) he makes marvelous Ambient music with Dub and IDM influences as Ontayso. Ontayso is an inspiration for me. It makes me even more proud to have a release next to edition 7 in Ontayso's Abstract Series.

Hi,

U-Cover CDR Limited (http://www.u-cover.com) will release the new Distant Fires Burning album "Build on Me". This one will be a bit Darker than Messierobjekten and 7 Sisters. Music is my way of dealing with things and this album is all about things I dealt with. It's also the first album where I use my Fender Jazz-bass a lot more to make ambient-scapes and drones. I'm a Bass player and was looking to incorporate this instrument into my music. So here's my vision on what it can be.

There's no release date yet but I'll let you know.
